New Report Demonstrates Nonprofits Good For Maine
Today MANP is very proud to release Adding Up Impact: Maine Nonprofits at Work, our newest report illustrating the essential contributions of Maine’s nonprofits to our State’s economy and quality of life.
Adding Up Impact highlights the following key findings:
- Nonprofits employ over 84,000 Maine citizens, making the nonprofit sector a more significant employer than any other industry in the state.
- Maine nonprofits contribute approximately $10 billion per year to the economy through wages paid, retail and wholesale purchases, and professional services contracts. This contribution is equivalent to 18.9% of Maine’s gross domestic product, which is greater than that of the manufacturing and construction industries combined.
- Maine nonprofits paid over $3.6 billion in wages in 2013, which translates into an estimated $206 million of personal income tax revenue for Maine’s state and local governments and over $411 million in federal tax revenues.
The report also features return on investment case studies from eight nonprofits across Maine, which have been featured on this blog over the past two weeks. These stories bring to life the many ways nonprofits stimulate the economy, strengthen communities, foster civic engagement and weave a strong safety net for Maine’s citizens.
“This report serves as a key resource for government and business leaders, as well as the general public, to better understand the critical role nonprofits play in economic development,” said Scott Schnapp, MANP’s Executive Director. “The Governor’s recent budget proposal to impose additional tax burdens on nonprofits illustrates the need for data to highlight the significant economic and social impact the nonprofit sector has throughout the state.”
The report’s release coincides with MANP’s Nonprofit Week, which include a number of activities highlighting the impact of the nonprofit sector and the 12th annual Nonprofit Day at the State House on January 29th. This event highlights Maine’s diverse nonprofit sector and its commitment to partnering with state government to ensure Maine’s prosperity and quality of life.
