The State We're In - Maine Highlighted in NPQ Article

by Brenda Peluso

Our state is profiled in the Winter 2009 edition of the Nonprofit Quarterly, entitled “Local Conditions Vary”. The profile is one segment in a section: “The state we’re in: How bad is it out there?” This section acknowledges the importance of state economies in the current health and future prospects of most U.S. nonprofits and provides a comparative overview of some of the key economic drivers in 14 different states.

The print issue is excellent but on the NPQ web site there is even more information. Each profiled state has its own page –  Maine can be accessed here.

You are busy – why check it out?

  1. NPQ is a very useful publication for nonprofit leaders and if you are not already a subscriber this page and the website overall gives you a sense of the array of resources they provide to nonprofits across our state and the nation;
  2. This set of articles provides a useful framework for understanding Maine’s nonprofit environment in comparison to others;
  3. NPQ is using this opportunity to pull together in one place all of its recent case, studies, articles and daily newswires that relate to what is happening in our state; and finally and most important
  4. In an attempt to document this period with accuracy and heart, NPQ is inviting your contributions to the Maine page under its “Add a Story” function. I encourage you to send along local stories and analytical pieces so that this website truly represents our experiences. Page contributions will be moderated and NPQ editors will be happy to help you with the form and any copy editing you might need.

Finally, I would encourage you to subscribe to the Nonprofit Quarterly at http://store.nonprofitquarterly.org/subscriptions.html . This is one publication that pays close attention to what is happening in communities and in nonprofits like yours. The code “mestate” will get you a $10 discount.
